Obama Sake Co.
Obama is a relatively new Japanese sake brewery, established in 2016 after taking over the business from Wakasa Fuji Brewery.
The roots of the Wakasa Fuji Brewery go back to the mid-19th century. The Yoshioka Sake Company in Obama and Henmi Brewery in Kuma River. After a merger in 1965, only Wakasa Fuji Brewery is still brewing sake in the Obama area.
With the hope of bringing a new wind to the drastically changing Japanese sake industry as well as contributing to regional development centered on the sake brewery, the descendants of the Yoshioka Sake Company took the lead in establishing the Obama Sake Company.
GOHYAKUMAGOKU RICE
Gohyakumagoku is a rice developed for cold regions.
It is characterised by its large grain size, high starch content and low protein and fat content, which cause a peculiar taste, resulting in clean and refreshing taste.
Sakes made with Gohyakumangoku rice tends to have a subdued aromas and a light texture and flavour.
Subsoil water
Fukui Prefecture is blessed with mineral-rich Mt. Haku water.
Rain and snow fall on mountains across Japan, including Mt. Haku, one of the three most famous mountains in Japan, with its vast virgin beech forests.
The water passes through the strata, absorbing high-quality minerals over a long period of time, and flows into the river as subsoil water of clear Minami River.
Wakasa -JUNMAI GINJO-
In 2022, the Brewery won a platinum award at the Luxembourg Salmon Challenge, an international liquor competition.
Brand “Wakasa”(わかさ) won the Platinum Award in the Junmai Ginjo category at the Luxembourg Sake Challenge 2022, an annual sake competition organised by the Association of Sommeliers of Japan.
This sake is made from Obama City’s sake rice names ‘Gohyakumangoku’ and subsoil water from the Minami River which flows through Obama City, allowing visitors to enjoy the bounty of rice and water.

Wakasa – JUNMAI DAIGINJO –
This Sake is brewed with the subsoil water from the Minami River which flows through Obama City.
Highly polished rice tends to result in a light, delicate-flavored sake. By polishing the rice to a polishing ratio of less than 50%, proteins and fats, which are the source of the extra miscellaneous flavours on the surface of the rice.
JUNMAI DAIGINJO is thoroughly and painstakingly polished to procreate the special taste that only junmai sake has.

Kumagawajuku -Ginjo-
Widely loved ginjo-shu since the days of Wakasa Fuji.
Brewed using Yamadanishiki for the koji rice and Gohyakumangoku of the Fukui premium rice.
Kumagawajuku with a full aroma and a dry taste typical of Japanese sake plus a few additions to express mouthfeel and texture.
Kumagawajuku has matured and can now be enjoyed at a wide range of temperatures. Heating sake changes the way the tongue perceives certain flavors. Sweetness and umami become more pronounced at nearly body temperature
